European Mobility Week
16 – 22 September 2009
On Saturday 19 September, from 10.00h to 14.00h, we leave our cars aside and we take a different ride in the centre of Lefkosia.
The Ministry of Agriculture, in cooperation with the European Commission Representation in Cyprus, the European Parliament Office, the Lefkosia Traffic Branch, the Municipalities of Lefkosia, Ayios Dometios, Strovolos and Engomi, as well as with the NGOs “Podilatokinisi Cycling Club” and “Federation of Cycling Organizations”, co-organize, within the European Mobility Week, a special event with the aim of diffusing a strong message of hope for a better life in a better city.
For 4 hours long, Makariou 3rd Avenueat the centre of the city will be closed to cars and the citizens will be able to stroll around on foot or take a ride on alternative means of transport, such as bicycles. At the same time, many other entertaining events, like face painting, graffiti contest, stilt walkers etc. are on schedule for our little friends and those young at heart, while information material about “green” ways of transport in the city will also be on offer.
The highlight of the event is the big cycling tour, under the slogan “On a bicycle you can make a difference”, which will start at 10.00h from Makariou Avenue and will go around the larger Lefkosia area, passing through several municipalities. The aim of this campaign is to mobilize local authorities to implement and promote sustainable ways of transport, as well as to invite Lefkosia citizens to use alternative means of transport besides the car. At 12.30h, a 5-km. foot race will be held in Lefkosia, with departure and finish also at Makariou Avenue.
The European Mobility Week is held every year in all countries of the European Union, from 16 to 22 September. It is a yearly information campaign that promotes sustainable transportation in the city and is organized by EUROCITIES, ENERGIE-CITES and CLIMATE ALLIANCE networks, with the support of the European Commission, Directorate General for Environment.
